Ecofriendly Design of New Nickel-Iron Battery

Abstract :

The storage battery made of Nickel-Iron plates uses Potassium Hydroxide of Sp. Gravity 1.21 as electrolyte, which is used for conducting current in the battery.

There is no chemical reaction inside the batteryand hence there are no obnoxious fumes or gases produced during the charge-discharge operation Therefore this is ideally eco-friendly battery as compared to traditional Lead-Acid battery.

The battery is small in size, light weight and maintenance free and has high efficiency (more than 72%) It can be discharged to even zero volts and afterwards can be recharged to rated capacity.The author has designed such a battery of 300 VA capacity and is being tested for all its characteristic parameters.

It is being developed for use in solar and wind energy utilization mainly but can be a good alternative for Lead-Acid battery of domestic inverter . Its cost will be higher than Lead-Acid battery, but due to long life and eco-friendly nature, it would outweigh its higher cost.
